Barrel  MGA02-107 earned its place as Cut No. 4. A 21-year-old American Light Whiskey is a rare thing — a whiskey that asked for two decades of patience and repaid it with depth few bottles ever reach. Rich and concentrated, generous and complex, it delivers all the reward of long aging with the presence of its 129.02 proof. For a palate that knows what time does to great whiskey, this is a pour worth slowing down for.

It is also a fitting tribute. Cut No. 4 honors the 251st birthday of the United States Navy — and every Sailor, past and present, who has answered the call to serve. There is a quiet symmetry in marking 251 years of service with a whiskey that spent 21 of them patiently becoming what it was meant to be. The only regret is that a single barrel yields only so many bottles. Once it's gone, it's gone — the pleasure and the burden of something made once and never again. What remains is the memory of a pour worth the wait, and a salute worth raising.

NOSE
Rich and inviting from the first approach. Caramelized sugar leads, wrapped in vanilla and a soft, ripe fruitiness that only decades in oak can draw from a spirit. Beneath the sweetness, mature oak lends warmth and depth without sharpness. This is not a young whiskey announcing itself — it's a patient one, unfolding slowly. Nose it without hurry; twenty-one years are in the glass, and they take their time.

PALATE
The entry is lush and immediate — caramelized sugar and vanilla arriving together, richer and rounder than the proof would suggest. As it moves across the palate, the layers reveal themselves: honeyed sweetness, ripe orchard and tropical fruit, and the deep, resinous character of long-aged oak. At 129.02 proof there is real presence, but the years have softened every edge into something concentrated and generous. A whiskey that rewards a slow, contemplative sip.

MOUTH-FEEL
Full, viscous, and coating. The weight is immediately apparent — a richness that clings to the palate and speaks to more than two decades in the barrel. Despite the 129.02 proof, there is no harsh heat; the pour is thick, silky, and unhurried, delivering its concentration with warmth rather than bite. This is what old American Light Whiskey does at its best — proof and age in perfect balance.

FINISH & COMPLEXITY
This whiskey does not reveal itself all at once — and that is its greatest virtue. Twenty-one years have layered sweetness upon fruit upon oak, and each sip surrenders a little more as the pour opens in the glass. The interplay between caramelized sugar, ripe fruit, and mature wood creates a depth that rewards patience and attention. This is not a one-note pour. It is a conversation more than two decades in the making.

The Story Behind This barrel

the Selection

For Cut No. 4, the search led somewhere unexpected. Onyx & Amber sent nine samples for selection — eight of them bourbons, including several finely-made wheated expressions. Any one might have carried a release. But when the ninth was poured — a rare, well-aged American Light Whiskey — the decision made itself. Against a field of good bourbons, this whiskey stood alone: deeper, richer, and more distinctive, with a character only decades of patient aging can produce. It didn't just make the Cut — it demanded it. A 21-year-old whiskey, personally selected to honor a milestone worthy of its age: the 251st birthday of the United States Navy.

Every barrel has a history. This one has a legacy that reaches back more than two decades. Cut No. 4 was distilled by Seagram's in 2005 — one of the storied names in American whiskey. When Seagram's distilling operations passed to MGP of Indiana, this barrel went with them, carried forward into a new era. It is the same distilling heritage behind Commodore's Cut No. 1, our very first release — so in a quiet way, Cut No. 4 traces its roots to where this whole journey began. American Light Whiskey, distilled to a high proof and laid down in oak, asks for patience above all else. This barrel was given twenty-one years of it. What emerged is a whiskey that could not be rushed, could not be replicated, and will not come again.

the Backstory

The Story Behind This barrel

the Environment -
Aged at A Mile High

Every barrel of Commodore's Cut comes of age in the high country of Colorado, and Cut No. 4 is no exception. At altitude, the air is thin and dry and the barometric pressure low — and the whiskey answers. Mountain-dry air and the pull of elevation draw the spirit deep into the oak and back again, an accelerated, concentrated exchange with the wood that lower, more humid climates simply cannot match. The result is a richer, more focused interaction between spirit and barrel — every year in Colorado working harder than a year spent closer to sea level. Distilled in 2005 and matured in the mountains, this barrel carries that altitude influence into its final expression: concentrated, generous, and unmistakably shaped by the high country.
